Common Fire exists to transform healthcare through partnerships with leaders committed to making and keeping promises to patients and families – for safe care, care that heals and restores, and for care experiences that bring joy to both those giving and receiving care. Barbara works primarily with organizational leaders – healthcare organization boards, CEOs, senior leadership teams, and clinical executives – to achieve results at the whole system rather than a single project level.

Presentations and Seminars

Barbara Balik offers a range of presentations and seminars to hospital and professional associations, healthcare organizations and boards, state-wide coalitions, and academic settings. The presentations and seminars are tailored to the unique needs of the group with an emphasis on leadership actions for quality and safety, performance measures, cultural development for quality/safety, effective risk prevention and management systems, and the business case for quality. Sample topics include:

  • The Heart of Leadership - Leadership for Transformation
  • Leadership and Systems for Electronic Health Record Implementation - an Adaptive Approach
  • Creating an Exceptional Patient and Family Experience - Patient and Family Centered Care
  • Understanding the Patient Journey - Observational and Improvement Skills to Transform the Patient Experience and Develop Reliable Systems
  • Achieving Patient Safety and Exceptional Patient Experience
  • Transparency as a Strategic Focus – Measurement for Quality
  • The Board Bundle – What Boards Do to Achieve Quality and Safety
  • Effective Risk Prevention and Management – Do Good and Save Resources
  • Integrating Quality, Safety, and Risk for Improved Outcomes
  • Engaging Clinicians in Ideal Patient Care
  • The Business Case for Quality – Understanding and Applying in Healthcare

Short and Long-term Partnerships

Organizational leaders who seek greater breadth of actions in the partnership, have the option of short-term or long-term engagements to assist in achieving transformative results. The focus for these engagements is on developing adaptive systems from front line caregivers and managers to executives.  Examples of completed engagements include:

  • Electronic health record implementation and optimization based on understanding and improving work processes - discovering the hidden work of caregivers that result in unintended outcomes and risks for patients
  • Quality and safety infrastructure and systems assessment in healthcare delivery organizations
  • Organizational culture of safety assessments

Leadership and Board Retreats

Common Fire offers in-depth development for leadership teams and boards in retreats designed to understand current performance in quality and safety as well as the barriers to progress, build awareness of the potential for rapid improvements, and identify key actions – what to do now and how to do it. A team of experts drawn from across the country are often assembled to meet the client’s unique needs. The retreats emphasize a partnership of building leadership and board capabilities in addition to supportive systems to assure ongoing results.
