Barbara Balik RN, EdD heads Common Fire. She brings rich, deep, and successful skills:

  • A respected CEO of a 400 bed hospital, multispecialty clinics, and ambulance service in a large metropolitan healthcare system in a challenging market and regulatory environment
  • Led organizational change and outcomes in a large health system that engaged both clinical and administrative executives incorporating the clinical and business case for quality – for example, perinatal services, flow across acute care, and whole system measurement
  • Recognized for innovative approaches to care, Barbara effectively merged clinics; created the region's first surgical short stay unit, heart hospital, acuity adjustable beds, and intensivist system; developed ground-breaking systems to engage nurses in advancing their practice; redesigned inpatient services to serve unique care and growth needs
  • Practiced as a labor and delivery nurse and pediatric nurse practioner in an academic health setting, community hospital, primary care clinics, and rural outreach program
  • Recognized as a patient and family-centered care and patient experience expert
 

Barbara now is a Senior Faculty member with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, is a Board of Governors member of the National Patient Safety Foundation, serves on the Board of the American Society of Health System Pharmacists Research and Education Foundation, the Presbyterian Healthcare Services System Quality Committee, member of the Planetree Designation Committee, and the Picker Always Events National Steering Committee.

From December 2003 to January 2007, Barbara was the Executive Vice President for Safety and Quality Systems, Safety and Chief Quality Officer for Allina Hospitals and Clinics, Minnesota’s largest healthcare system with 65 clinics, 11 hospitals, and community based services.

Prior to the system-level position, Barbara was CEO of United Hospital in St. Paul, MN, part of the Allina system, from 1997 to 2003, and Vice President of Patient Care from 1993 to 1997.

From 1986 to 1993, Barbara worked at Minneapolis Children’s Medical Center as Vice President of Patient Care.

Her undergraduate degree is from Marycrest College, masters degree in nursing from the University of Minnesota, and a doctorate in organizational leadership from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN.
